Percival Trophy

Heswall Ladies Team wins Percival Trophy 2009!

Congratulations go to the Ladies team who won the Percival Trophy in the finals at Sutton Hall on 3rd September.  It is 26 years since the trophy last came to Heswall.  Well Done Ladies!  Congratulations must  go to all the players who were involved in the previous rounds, Hilary McNeil, Margaret Page and Rachel Goodall, but especially to the 7 Ladies who played at Sutton Hall. The Percival Trophy is competed for each year by all participating clubs in the West Cheshire Shield area.  Each team consists of 6 Ladies playing 3 foursomes matches.

'Heswall won the first round 2 -1 at home against Runcorn, who were last year's winners.  The next round was played away at Antrobus, a very tricky course, and we managed a 2 -1 win there.  This qualified us to play at Sutton Hall in the semi final in the morning against Bromborough.  What a terrible weather forecast we had and sure enough the forecast was absoultely correct - a howling wind and sometimes torrential rain.  It was the same for everybody, but the course held up remarkably well and so did the players!  The team in the morning was:

  1. Barbara Jamieson and Bette St John
  2. Sue Humphreys and Maureen Blackham
  3. Sara Spencer and Sue Totty

We beat Bromborough by 2 -1 and so onto the final against Wallasey in the afternoon. The team in the afternoon was:

  1. Sara Spencer and Sue Totty
  2. Sue Humphreys and Maureen Blackham
  3. Barbara Jamieson and Ros Osborne

Unfortunately Bette had to withdraw from the final due to a painful foot, so Ros came in as a reserve.  All 3 matches were played in slightly drier conditions but the wind remained the same. The first 2 matches were won by Heswall and the 3rd match was called in.'
